THE mother of Regency Hotel murder victim David Byrne faced a family loss just days before today’s court ruling.
Sadie Byrne will hear the verdicts in her son’s murder trial today.
David Byrne was shot dead when gunmen opened fire at a boxing weigh-in inside the Regency Hotel in north Dublin on February 5, 2016.
Gerry ‘The Monk’ Hutch is charged with the murder of Byrne.
Lisa Thompson, the sister of Sadie Byrne, died last weekend, according to the Sunday World.
The woman, aged in her 70s, was the mother of convicted gangland murderer Freddie Thompson.
Lisa was not involved in crime.
Following the family loss news, Sadie attended the Special Criminal Courts this morning to hear the verdicts.
They’re expected to take a couple of hours as presiding Judge Tara Burns reads out the lengthy judgement.
Hutch could walk out of court a free man if he’s found not guilty.
And cops will be on alert because he remains a major target of the Kinahan cartel.
If Hutch is acquitted it’s expected that he’ll return to Spain where he was arrested in August, 2021, because he is a tax-paying resident and owns property there.
If he is found guilty he’ll automatically be given a mandatory life sentence for murder.
He’ll be returned to Spain to serve his sentence as part of the conditions of his extradition set down by the Spanish court.
TRIAL VERDICTS
The 60-year-old, last of the Paddocks, Clontarf, Co Dublin, has pleaded not guilty.
Jason Bonney, 52, of Drumnigh Wood, Portmarnock, Co Dublin, and Paul Murphy, 61, of Cherry Avenue, Swords, Co Dublin, have been found guilty of helping a criminal gang to commit the murder at the Regency Hotel seven years ago.
Last year, former Sinn Fein councillor Jonathan Dowdall was jailed for four years for helping a criminal gang murder David Byrne in the Regency Hotel.
His father Patrick Dowdall was caged for two years for the same offence, the Special Criminal ruled.
