She said she was “delighted” with the sentence.

John Hutch survived the assassination attempt, which was witnessed by Vera, at their home in Drumalee Avenue, Dublin, in September 2016, but he tragically died in an accident in the house three years later.

Vera, whose son Gareth was shot dead by the Kinahan cartel in May 2016, told The Irish Sun: “We’re delighted with what he got. We’re glad it’s over now, thank God. We’ll never forget what he done.”

Asked how the family have been since John passed away, she said: “It’s sad, things will never be the same. All over that scumbag in there.”

Vera added that her family have been told the feud between the Kinahan and Hutch camps is now at an end.

She said: “We were told it’s over. We’re trying to move on with our lives now.”

Other family members who attended the court, including three of John’s daughters, said they were off to “celebrate” the Special Criminal Court result.

Carroll, 43, of Bride Street, Dublin 8, fired “indiscriminately” at John Hutch as he and Vera arrived at their house off the North Circular Road, the court was told.

He also tried to assassinate another Hutch relative, Edward Staunton, six months after that.

Carroll was originally charged with the attempted murder of John Hutch, then 63, over the shooting carried out on September 2, 2016.

However last March, Carroll — who was extradited from the UK in April 2022 — pleaded guilty to a new charge of having in his possession or control a firearm with intent to endanger life, contrary to Section 15 of the Firearms Act, on that date.

He was also charged with twice attempting to murder Staunton on the night of March 26, 2017 at James Joyce Street, Dublin 1, and again at Peadar Kearney House, Railway Street, Dublin 1.

In that attack, the gunman ran over his victim in a car — knocking him into the air — before tracking his injured victim down and shooting him twice as he lay on the ground waiting for help.

However, at the three-judge court, Carroll pleaded guilty to just one offence — the attempted murder of Staunton at Railway Street on March 26, 2017.

Presiding Judge Tony Hunt today described Carroll as “a ruthless and dangerous criminal with a callous contempt for public safety”.

‘DELIBERATE PLAN’

He added that it was clear the accused had a “deliberate plan to murder a particular target” and described the CCTV footage of the murder attempt on Staunton as “chilling”.

The court heard Carroll knew the Kinahan Organised Crime Group was offering money to target members of the Hutch gang, following the murder of cartel thug David Byrne at the Regency Hotel in February 2016.

He also wanted to “ingratiate himself” with the Kinahan-Byrne gang in Dublin.

In the hit on John Hutch, Gerry ‘The Monk’ Hutch’s older brother, on September 2, 2016, Carroll arrived with two guns, firing at his target as he ran into his back garden and shut the gate.

Carroll had previously placed a tracking device on John’s car and his wife Vera had been in the car with John when they arrived at the house.

Six months later Carroll targeted Staunton, a known associate of the Hutch gang. He ran his victim over, knocking him into the air, and then shot him as he lay on the ground.

GUILTY PLEA

Staunton survived and Carroll fled the country but was extradited and pleaded guilty at the Special Criminal Court.

Mr Justice Tony Hunt sentenced Carroll to 10-and-a-half years for the Hutch shooting and 14 years for the attempted murder of Eddie Staunton, with two-and-a half years suspended to allow for rehabilitation. In total his jail sentence is 22 years.

At the sentencing hearing in May, Vera’s victim impact statement said that “everything stopped” for her that day and the incident never leaves her mind.

On that occasion, Detective Garda Michael Lennon told prosecutor Sean Gillane SC that the first offence arose from Carroll’s attempt to assassinate John at his and wife Vera’s home.

He said a few days’ earlier Carroll had gone to the rear of the house and placed a tracker under John Hutch’s Nissan car. The device noted John’s movements between August 30 and September 2.

CCTV FOOTAGE

Carroll was captured on CCTV footage carrying a bag and leaving the School Street Flats on September 2 before getting into a stolen Opel Astra.

Mr Hutch and his wife were parking up at the rear of their house when the Opel Astra approached them at speed and came to an abrupt halt.

Carroll approached their vehicle with two firearms, the first containing seven rounds of ammunition and the second with six rounds.

As John ran into his back garden, shutting the gate, the gunman dropped one of the weapons but then fired “indiscriminately” with the other, a revolver, with the victim’s daughter also present.

Vera Hutch could be seen in the CCTV footage running across the road, the prosecutor said.

Mr Gillane said that all of the rounds of ammunition in the revolver were fired and Carroll had retrieved the second weapon before making good his escape. The Opel Astra was later found burnt out.

MURDER ATTEMPT

Detective Garda Sheila Sheehan gave evidence about the attempted murder of Mr Staunton on March 26, 2017, telling the court that the two separate attacks on the victim were very close together.

Mr Staunton was cycling to see a friend in the Liberty House area of Dublin 1 when he became suspicious of an individual in a Ford Focus.

Mr Staunton proceeded along James Joyce Street in Dublin 1 when the vehicle sped up and drove directly towards him.

Mr Staunton was riding on the footpath when the car hit him, spinning him into the air and onto the bonnet of the car.

Mr Gillane said the incident was captured on CCTV footage and Mr Staunton could be seen running in the direction of Peadar Kearney House on Railway Street immediately afterwards.

Carroll, who was driving the Ford Focus — attempted to move the vehicle before he then emerged from it.

Mr Staunton was making his way on foot to Peadar Kearney House when he called out to several members of the public and fell to the ground.

The victim remained lying on the ground as Carroll made his way to the location.

FOUR SHOTS FIRED

Mr Gillane said Carroll produced a firearm when he saw Mr Staunton and discharged four shots from the gun at him.

Mr Staunton was hit twice in the lower body, which caused members of the public to run away in fear.

According to Det Gda Sheehan, Mr Staunton was in intensive care in The Mater Hospital until April 7 and had remained in the high dependency unit until his condition improved.

John had been targeted by the Kinahan cartel as they launched a bloodbath against the Hutch family in the months following the Regency Hotel murder of Byrne in February 2016.

Eddie Hutch, a brother of Gerry and John, was gunned down at his home on Poplar Row in the north inner city in the days that followed.

John and Vera’s son Gareth was shot dead after leaving his home in Avondale House in May, 2016.

Jonathan Keogh, 38, who fired the fatal shots, Regina Keogh, 46, and Thomas Fox, 31, are all serving life sentences for that murder.
