Gerry ‘The Monk’ Hutch could be set for Netflix feature as global network considers ‘rag-to-riches’ gangster’s life doc

GERRY ‘The Monk’ Hutch could soon become a Netflix star.

A trailer on the life story of the gangster, made by award-winning producer and director Jim Sheridan, is being looked at by the global network.

The revelation comes as the legendary Dublin criminal’s story is being told in a new two-part RTE doc to be screened tonight.

It is understood Gerry Hutch did not cooperate with that programme, which will feature extensive archive footage from when he was a kid.

Hutch, who ran in the recent General Election, doesn’t think RTE gave him fair coverage and tried to knock him and brought up his criminal past at every opportunity.

The crime boss, whose last conviction was in 1983, has however produced hours of exclusive interviews with Sheridan and his team, which includes former Government minister Conor Lenihan.

Both Netflix and Sky have indicated to Sheridan they are very interested in The Monk’s rags-to-riches life story.

The director has made a trailer on the proposed real-life story and it is being sent to them.

A source said: “Gerry gave Jim his full co-operation and has given him several hours of taped interviews. Some of the stuff he spoke about is incredible.

“However, some clips may have to be refilmed because they are now outdated and have been overtaken by (recent) events.

“There will be huge public interest in his story and what he has to say.

“Both Netflix and Sky are now considering it.”

RTE DOC ON GERRY HUTCH’S LIFE

The RTE documentary focuses on the life of one of Ireland’s most well known criminals from his early life right up to his bid for a Dail seat last year.

Acclaimed broadcaster Leo Enright shares his own story of dealing with Hutch in 1978 in north inner city Dublin.

A then-teenaged Hutch was leader of “The Bugsies” a youth gang named after the gangster musical Bugsy Malone.

Enright tells of how he got in good with the group and was invited to a candlelit dinner in Hutch’s tenement flat, where he lived with his girlfriend.

The series then documents Hutch’s life after growing up in Summerhill, taking in his money making exploits, his appearance at Ireland’s Criminal Courts of Justice, and his election bid.

It also covers the notorious Regency Hotel murder, which Hutch was cleared of in 2023.
