A PRIEST told how Eddie Hutch Jr’s death had caused “great shock in the community and for his family” at his funeral today.

Fr Michael Casey said his relatives had been plunged into grief in recent times— as he read an online tribute from an anonymous member of the public.

The message read: “I don’t know you Edward, only your surname. What I do know is that it has been a name laid with sadness and grief. May God comfort an already broken family.”

And Fr Casey told his funeral: “That’s our prayer this morning as well. We’re aware you, his extended family, have been in this place of grief many, many times.”

Mourners also heard how Eddie died before he found out he was going to be a grandfather — with his two dangerous brothers, Alan and Ross, watching today’s service online from a private room in Dublin’s Wheatfield Prison.

Kinahan cartel target Patsy Hutch, dressed in a black suit and wearing glasses, carried the coffin of his nephew, who was remembered as a “quiet man, who didn’t like the limelight”.

But there was no sign of his more infamous uncle, Gerry ‘The Monk’ Hutch, at the Lady of Lourdes of Church on Dublin’s Sean McDermott Street.

The Monk has divided his time between Dublin and Lanzarote, in Spain, since he was acquitted of the 2016 Regency Hotel murder of Kinahan thug David Byrne in April 2023.

Eddie’s dad, Eddie Sr, who was shot dead at his Dublin home days after Byrne’s murder in a revenge hit, and his mother Jenny, who died of a heart attack in February of last year, were both remembered at the funeral.

His brother Christopher ‘Bouncer’ Hutch, who died of a drug overdose in 2003, was also remembered today.

Another brother, Gavin Hutch, carried his remains, along with Patsy, from same church which held the funerals of both his parents.

Patsy’s two sons, Derek ‘Del Boy’ and Patrick Hutch, were also in attendance. Their older brother, Gary was shot dead in Marbella, Spain, in September 2015 — kicking off the bloody Kinahan-Hutch feud which resulted in 18 murders.

Eddie’s daughter Megan was among the chief mourners and the mass was told he died before she could tell him he was going to be a grandfather.

The 47-year-old’s body was found at his home on Dublin’s Poplar Row on May 19. No foul play is suspected.

Gifts brought to altar

Fr Casey told mourners: “I know many of you were concerned about Eddie. He had isolated himself and withdrew a little bit for some time.”

Daughter Megan and brother Gavin brought gifts to the altar, including a portrait of him and a can of Guinness.

And Eddie’s cousin Vanessa read a few words on behalf of the family, saying: “Unfortunately Edward passed before Megan got to tell him he was going to be a grandfather.

“He used to have an Aller. For those who do not know it was an Alsatian dog who he absolutely adored. One of his siblings thought it was funny to play a prank on him and took the dog off for a couple of hours.

‘Fun and games’

“Well, the biggest search party in the history of Dublin was called.

“He also took a trip down to Mosney with a couple of his mates which he had free accommodation, as you would know. He went to Dan Lowry’s, where they had fun and games. And he slipped away earlier than the rest of the crew and went back to the chalet and cooked up a storm of a big pot of stew.

“When all the crew came back, which was about 3am in the morning, it was devoured. When Edward was asked where he learnt his cooking skills, he said: ‘Only in the best place — the Joy.’”

After the funeral mass, Eddie’s remains were buried in Glasnevin cemetery.

Brothers watched from jail

His heartbroken younger brothers Alan, 43, and Ross Hutch, 32, watched the funerals online at Wheatfield after their applications for temporary release from jail were rejected.

A source said: “Taken into account is the safety of prison officers who would have had to escort them from the prison and stayed with them at all times.

“The safety of the public is also taken into account. The two men are very volatile and a decision was made to reject their applications.”
