THE murder of gangster Gary Hutch sparked a brutal feud between two mobs in Ireland.

Hutch, 34, was the nephew of Gerry ‘The Monk’ Hutch, who was this week found not guilty and freed after a major criminal trial.

Gary Hutch once held a senior role in the Kinahan Organised Crime Group.

And during Spanish police surveillance between 2008 and 2010, they classified Gary as being Daniel Kinahan’s“right-hand man”.

Daniel and Hutch were inseparable during their time in Spain and he also became close to other cartel members like James Quinn and David and Liam Byrne.

Between the years of 2008 and 2013, relationships were good between the younger cartel members. But, like many criminal gangs over the years, loyalties were soon set aside.

WHY WAS HE KILLED?

In February 2014, and despite having no evidence, Hutch was accused of being a “rat” when a €10million cartel shipment of ketamine and cannabis was seized in Cheshire in the UK.

In August of 2014, Gary recruited a hitman to murder Daniel outside his pad in Estepona.

The hit was a failure and the bond between the Hutch and Kinahan groups dismantled.

In the summer of 2015, a €200,000 compensation package was paid to the Kinahan cartel as the Hutches sought to protect Gary.

But on September 25, 2015, the cartel ignored the pact and had Gary shot dead at his apartment block in southern Spain.

James Quinn, 35, was found guilty of participating in Hutch’s murder and he was subsequently jailed for 22 years.

Five other people were held over the Hutch killing but only Quinn was charged.

HOW DID IT SPARK FEUD?

Hutch’s death is widely regarded as sparking the ongoing Hutch-Kinahan feud in Dublin, which has claimed 18 lives.

In October of 2015, Gary’s brother, Derek ‘Del Boy’, survived an attack inside Mountjoy Prison.

In December, hitmen carried out a failed attempt to kill Gerry ‘The Monk’ Hutch in Lanzarote.

In February of 2016, Kinahan cartel associate David Byrne was shot dead at the Regency Hotel by a six-man hit team.

Just three days later, The Monk’s brother Eddie Hutch was murdered at his home in north inner city Dublin.

Eddie’s funeral was the last public appearance from The Monk before he went into hiding. The next would be when he was arrested and returned to Ireland in 2021.

A total of 18 people were killed in the bloody feud that gripped Ireland’s capital.

In 2022, The Monk went on trial for the murder of David Byrne at the Regency Hotel. He was found not guilty and freed.
